Gaura Purnima - The Advent of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu

Gaura Purnima - The Advent of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu

It was the year of A.D. 1486. The pearly white moon glittered in the sky as scores of devotees gathered at the banks of the Ganges to observe the lunar eclipse.

They loudly chanted “Hari! Hari!” with blissful smiles stitched onto their radiant faces. Thus, Lord Krishna appeared as the son of Sri Jagannath Mishra and Srimati Shachi Devi in Mayapur Dham.

Since the Lord was born under a neem tree, He was named “Nimai”. His moon-like face and charming smile captured the hearts of all the devotees who came greet His fortunate parents, and owing to His strikingly golden complexion, He earned the name “Gauranga”.

Kheturi Maha-mahotsava - the first Gaura Purnima festival

Srila Narottama Dasa Thakura conducted the first Gaura Purnima celebration in Kheturi, Bengal. It included the installation of six deities, including Sri Gauranga Deva, Sri Vallabhi Kanta, Sri Vraja Mohan, Sri Krishna, and Sri Radha Raman. He organised the festival to spread the teachings of the Gosvamis and to celebrate the auspicious appearance day of Sri Gauranga.

Many renowned devotees attended the celebration, including Jahnava Devi, Nityananda Prabhu’s wife. Narottama Dasa led an euphoric kirtan, which was so joyful that Lord Chaitanya Himself appeared along with His dearest associates. The celebration, known as Kheturi Mahotsava, lasted three days and was indeed remarkable and memorable.

Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is non-different from Krishna

To explain how the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Krishna and Sri Caitanya are the same personalities, Srila Prabhupada employs the following analogy. When a teacher observes a student struggling in class, he patiently explains the classwork to help the child understand. He guides the student, but does not learn alongside him.

Similarly, the living entity tends to fall under illusion because of the tricks of this material world. The Supreme Lord, however, is not subject to falling into illusion.

Therefore, we should not consider Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to be one of us. Lord Caitanya came to earth simply to preach krishna bhakti, love of Krishna. In other words, He is Lord Krishna Himself, teaching the living entities the proper way to approach Krishna. Although He appears in the guise of a devotee, we should always remember that Lord Caitanya is Krishna Himself, teaching us how to become Krishna conscious, and we must worship Him in that light.

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu

The Teachings of Lord Chaitanya

Srila Narottama Das Thakur writes how the darling of Vrindavan, Sri Krishna, and His elder brother Sri Balarama appeared in this material world as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Sri Nityananda prabhu. On adventing, They delivered countless fallen souls simply by the chanting and singing of the Hare Krishna mahamantra. He evidences this by further stating how Mahaprabhu liberated two of the most atrocious and wretched sinners, Jagai and Madhai, by encouraging them to chant the Hare Krishna mantra.

Lord Caitanya maintains these statements by boldly declaring:

harer nāma harer nāma
harer nāmaiva kevalam
kalau nāsty eva nāsty eva
nāsty eva gatir anyathā

“In this age of quarrel and hypocrisy, the only means of deliverance is the chanting of the holy names of the Lord. There is no other way. There is no other way. There is no other way.”

Srila Locana dasa Thakur complements the words of Srila Narottama dasa Thakura by writing how the two Lords, Nitai-Gauracandra, are very merciful. They are the essence of all incarnations. The specific significance of these incarnations is that They introduced a process of chanting and dancing that is simply joyful.

Pancha Tattva - Five features of the Absolute Truth

Pancha Tattva - Five features of the Absolute Truth

Srila Krishna dasa Kaviraj Gosvami expounds the five absolute features of the Lord in his rendition on Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s glorious life, Sri Caitanya Caritamrita. He mentions how Krishna manifests as a devotee, expansion of a devotee, incarnation of a devotee, pure devotee, and devotional energy. These five tattvas incarnate with Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and thus the Lord executes His Harinama sankirtan movement with great pleasure.

Sri Nityananda Prabhu is the immediate expansion of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu as His brother, Sri Balarama. His body is transcendental (nitya) and full of ecstasy in devotional service (ananda).

Sri Advaita Acharya, the incarnation of a devotee, is vishnu-tattva and the embodiment of the Lord’s form known as Maha Vishnu. Together, they teach the living entities to engage in the service of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, i.e., Lord Krishna.

Sri Gadadhara Pandit is the incarnation of Krishna’s internal potency and dearmost devotee, Srimati Radharani, who engages in His confidential service. Finally, Srivas Thakur is the form of His devotee, Sri Narada Muni, who preaches about Krishna consciousness to everyone.

Sri Krishna Caitanya - the epitome of mercy

In the Bhagavad-gita, Lord Krishna sets forth the highest religious principle in this way: “Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reaction. Do not fear.” (BG 18.66).

Thus, it is evident that to receive Krishna’s ultimate mercy and protection, complete surrender is a prerequisite. One must completely purify oneself, and only then can one strive to achieve the ultimate goal of life, to return to the spiritual world.

Srila Rupa Gosvami eulogises Lord Caitanya’s generous nature in the following manner:

namo mahā-vadānyāya kṛṣṇa-prema-pradāya te
kṛṣṇāya kṛṣṇa-caitanya-nāmne gaura-tviṣe namaḥ

“O most munificent incarnation! You are Krishna Himself appearing as Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. You have assumed the golden colour of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī, and You are widely distributing pure love of Krishna. We offer our respectful obeisances unto You.”

Srila Prabhupada explains how he calls Mahaprabhu as Krishna’s most munificent incarnation, since although Krishna is difficult to understand, He freely distributes krishna-prema-bhakti to everyone without any discrimination. Krishna firstly wants us to offer ourselves unto Him, but Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu is so magnanimous that He inundates the heart of every living entity with the highest form of spiritual love and ecstasy. Thus, Srila Rupa Gosvami highlights the causeless mercy of Krishna’s splendid golden incarnation.

Srila Locana dasa Thakura also writes how, within the three worlds, there is no one like Lord Caitanya or Lord Nityananda. Their merciful qualities are so great that upon hearing Them, even birds and beasts cry, and stones melt.

The unique and highest love of Godhead

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu dancing in ecstasy

While the Vedic literatures and other spiritual scriptures elucidate the different methods and devotional practices to worship the Supreme Lord, the teachings given to us by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu are most special and great, as they reveal the confidential and highest form of love for Krishna as experienced by His greatest devotees, the gopis, headed by Srimati Radharani.

By His example as the Lord’s most ardent devotee, and assuming their mood of intense amorous love, He showed how, by sincerely chanting the Holy name with our heart, we can experience the topmost symptoms of ecstasy in Krishna consciousness and relish the bliss of spiritual life at its peak.

As is described in the Caitanya Caritamrita Madhya-lila, 15.107,

eka kṛṣṇa-nāme kare sarva-pāpa kṣaya
nava-vidhā bhakti pūrṇa nāma haite haya

Simply by chanting the holy name of Kṛṣṇa once, a person is relieved from all the reactions of a sinful life. One can complete the nine processes of devotional service simply by chanting the holy name.

Here, Lord Caitanya emphasises how, in the age of Kali, even by chanting the Hare Krishna maha mantra once, we can dissolve the gigantic volume of our sins, which is comparable to the size of the Himalayas. Further, by complementing our sadhana with seva, we can surely achieve the highest form of Krishna-conscious bliss, i.e., service as the conjugal lovers of Krishna.

It is not that Caitanya teaches a long and elaborate path to God realisation. He is completely spiritual, and He begins from the point of surrender to Krishna. He does not pursue the paths of karma-yoga, jnana-yoga, or hatha-yoga, but begins at the end of material existence — at the point where one gives up all material attachment.

If you wish to delve deeper into the life and teachings of Mahaprabhu, you may read Srila Prabhupada’s books on the same, especially the Teachings of Lord Caitanya and Caitanya-caritamrita. Hard copies are also available through the Hare Krishna Movement Mumbai's online store for those who would like to begin this sacred journey from home.
